For all the power of the Southeast Asian fruit in pill form, try a mangosteen capsule. This tiny pill packs all of the punch from the exciting fruit in a compact form, enabling the user to get all of the nutritional benefits and the anti-oxidant qualities without eating the entire fruit. The fruit, available only in canned or frozen form at the moment, is incredibly difficult to find whole as the United States fumigation and fruit/vegetable laws inhibit mangosteen from entering the country due to fruit fly issues.

Mangosteen rind, known as mangosteen pericarp, has been said to have serious medicinal qualities. This claim is creating quite a stir in the industry as mangosteen is becoming the latest fruit buzzword, causing the scientific and food communities to attempt to cash in on the possible benefits. The mangosteen is essentially unknown in terms of concrete data, however. As of present, the nutritional benefits are not unlike those of similar tropical fruits, and yet the mangosteen capsule remains an intriguing product on the market.

Investigating Mangosteen Capsule Claims

There are a variety of rumored effects from mangosteen pericarp. A quick search reveals that the benefits appear to range from skin vitamin properties to wound repair on one web site, to a cure for diarrhea on another. The most popular claims behind mangosteen pericarp is that it has anti-cancerous properties and a variety of anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial properties as well. Other web sites may likely claim mangosteen to be a reasonable cure for blindness or, perhaps, leprosy. Finding the actual properties of a mangosteen capsule can be confusing because of the abundance of information available in a variety of resources.

Mangosteens, as far as we know, have a variety of compounds within. The most prominent group of compounds within the mangosteen capsule available from most retailers are xanthones, which are a group of compounds said to contain a variety of anti-oxidant properties. They apparently carry some physiological influence as well, carrying an effect to those properties of the body that connect the brain to the muscle tissue and vice versa. The mangosteen capsule is available directly from Thailand, made from extract from the actual fruit in most cases, and is sold online or in a variety of health food stores.

Make sure you are not simply adding empty drugs to your body or, worse, adding something harmful because you were fooled by advertising. There is a distinct difference between advertising a product with possible effects and listing actual effects. The important part in considering the addition of compounds or other pharmaceutical additives to your diet is consultation of your doctor.

Findings:
Treatment of hepatocellular carcinomas (liver cancer) with chemotherapy has generally been
disappointing and it is most desirable to have more effective new drugs. The investigators
extracted and purified 6 xanthone compounds from the rinds (peel) of the fruit of Garcinia
mangostana, mangosteen fruit. The investigators tested this extract on 14 different human liver
cancer cell lines. Several chemotherapeutic agents (drugs) were included in the study for
comparison. The results showed that one of the xanthone derivatives which could be identified as
garcinone E has potent cytotoxic effect (kill cells) on all liver cancer cell lines as well as
on the other gastric and lung cancer cell lines included in the screen. The investigators
suggested that garcinone E may be potentially useful for the treatment of certain types of cancer.
