In our search for better health, and sometimes fighting with different diseases such as diabetes, we look into any and every possible solution that may provide a cure and or relief. Mangosteens and diabetes have been linked several times for many different reasons. Are the links between mangosteens and diabetes myths, or do they have a basis in reality? Let us look at some facts together in an effort to discover some answers.

Origins of the Mangosteen

Garcinia mangostana (or mangosteen) originates in East Asia, the Sunda Islands, and Moluccas. It is also known popularly as the “Queen of Fruits” for its tremendous beneficial capacities.

Mangosteen is a tropical plant which cannot survive below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Thus, its cultivation and import was almost impossible to achieve until recent technology was developed such as green house facilities. Today it is grown in successfully in Hawaii, where the climate is ideal.

Mangosteen trees are 7 to 25 meters tall. They grow at a very slow rate and, depending on their size, produce between 5 to 10 fruits per tree. The fruit size is approximately 2-3 inches and slightly bitter.

The Qualities of Mangosteen

The mangosteen fruit is very high in antioxidants, carbohydrates, and fibers. It is also high in several vitamins and minerals. It improves blood circulation and the immune system, thus helping the body to fight naturally any deficiencies or diseases.

Mangosteens and diabetes have been associated along the years to help reduced the levels of blood sugar. However, there has been no evidence proving that mangosteen is solely responsible for these results.

Mangosteen Research Study #17
Summarized by Narace D. Seudeal, Ph.D.

Findings:
The researchers found that xanthone preserved endothelial cells inhibited the increased adhesion of monocytes to endothelial cells induced by oxidized LDL. This is especially important in preventing plaque formation and the subsequent blockage of arteries and heart disease.

Study:
Relationship between protective effect of xanthone on endothelial cells and endogenous nitric oxide synthase inhibitors. Bioorg Med Chem. 2003 Nov 17;11(23):5171-7. Jiang DJ, Hu GY, Jiang JL, Xiang HL, Deng HW, Li YJ. Department of Pharmacology, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Central South University, Changsha 410078, China.

Mangosteen boosts the immune system and thus improve the overall health of anyone who consumes it regularly, which in due course will make the person feel energized and healthy. However, like what was found between mangosteens and diabetes, research does not show that it can be used as cure for any given disease.

Mangosteens do have other side effects on some, such as itching or rashes at skin level. If that should be the case, one must stop consuming it right away and see a doctor.

Mangosteens and diabetes may still have a great connection but, only one in which the fruit will help improve the overall body state not combat diabetes in particular. Consume mangosteens to boost your system regularly, but not as a cure for any illness. After all, most fruits are beneficial for our body.

Mangosteen Research Study #30
Summarized by Narace D. Seudeal, Ph.D.

Findings:
Of several compounds studied, xanthone emerged as a potent monoamine oxidase inhibitor
(MAOI).

Study:
Screening of unsubstituted cyclic compounds as inhibitors of monoamine oxidases. Biochem Pharmacol. 1994 Jun 15;47(12):2307-10. Thull U, Testa B. Institut de Chimie Therapeutique, Ecole de Pharmacie, Universite de Lausanne, Switzerland.
