The first thing a person might want to know is what mangosteen juice actually is. The mangosteen is a tropical fruit that has been used for centuries by native peoples in Southeast Asia.
It is a rather odd looking fruit, with a curvy, dark exterior, and a white fruit inside. The fruit itself looks like it has grown in pre-formed slices, much like an orange, but more distinctly formed.

According to those who have sampled it, the fruit has a distinct taste that is pleasant and unforgettable. Recently it has become better known in the western world, and has been hailed as the new miracle fruit. It has already been shown that there are quite a few benefits of mangosteen juice.

Mangosteen Research and Your Health

Even though the mangosteen and mangosteen juice are fairly recent additions to the western world, several studies have already proven some of the benefits of mangosteen juice. Oddly, mangosteen juice doesn’t contain many, if any, vitamins or minerals. What it does provide are carbohydrates, fiber, and iron. According to early research, however, that may be enough to help people in many ways.

Mangosteen Research Study #5
Summarized by Narace D. Seudeal, Ph.D.

Findings:
The fruit hull of mangosteen, Garcinia mangostana L., mangosteen fruit, has been used as a Thai
indigenous medicine for many years. However, its mechanism of action as a medicine has not
been elucidated. The present study was undertaken to examine the effects of mangosteen fruit extracts on histamine release and prostaglandin E2 synthesis. The investigators found the mangosteen fruit extract strongly inhibited histamine release and prostaglandin E2 synthesis.
This has great importance in preventing allergies.

Study:
Inhibitions of histamine release and prostaglandin E2 synthesis by mangosteen, a Thai medicinal plant. Biol Pharm Bull. 2002 Sep;25(9):1137-41. Nakatani K, Atsumi M, Arakawa T, Oosawa K, Shimura S, Nakahata N, Ohizumi Y. Department of Pharmaceutical Molecular Biology,
Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan.

According to research, one benefit of mangosteen juice is its positive relationship with the immune system and blood circulation. Apparently, research shows that mangosteen juice contains antioxidants called xanthones that can help your body’s immune system and healing processes.

Also, according to preliminary research, one of the benefits of mangosteen juice may be prevention. Early research seems to indicate that it can help ward off Alzheimer’s, heart disease and other diseases. Some doctors have even used the juice to treat patients with infections, fever, diarrhea, eczema and general body pain.

Generally, mangosteen juice is only available online, and is fairly expensive. The distribution system itself seems pretty large, with many people setting themselves up as independent distributors of mangosteen juice and touting the benefits of mangosteen juice. Mangosteen juice does not seem to have any negative properties, so it definitely won’t hurt you to try it. Hopefully, as mangosteen juice becomes more readily available, the price will drop and it will be more readily available to the public in general.

Whether mangosteen juice is the miracle fruit supplement that many hope it is or not will only be proven with time and more importantly more research. Even though it has been used for centuries in certain Asian countries, it may take a while for the benefits of mangosteen juice to be completely known and accepted in the western world.

Mangosteen Research Study #21
Summarized by Narace D. Seudeal, Ph.D.

Findings:
Mangiferin, a xanthone, lowered the blood glucose (sugar) level in type II diabetic mice. From these findings, it seems likely that mangiferin exerts its antidiabetic activity by decreasing insulin resistance.

Study:
Antidiabetic activity of a xanthone compound, mangiferin. Phytomedicine. 2001 Mar;8 (2):85-7. Miura T, Ichiki H, Hashimoto I, Iwamoto N, Kato M, Kubo M, Ishihara E, Komatsu Y, Okada M, Ishida T, Tanigawa K. Suzuka University of Medical Science, Mie, Japan.
